DAN BAIRD & The HOMEMADE SIN Fresh Outta Georgia: Live Like A Satellite Secret Records (2007)
This band are currently on tour; if you get a chance to catch them, do so. Why? Well this double live set is the proof!
Dan Baird is formerly of The Georgia Satellites, and this four piece open the set here with "It Comes To Me Naturally", typifying their sound. As you'd expect, high octane rock'n'roll that's both sleazy and bluesy.
Forget trends, this is a very retro sound. Touches of Rolling Stones and Hanoi Rocks, high tempo blues, you can't help but love it. And while The Satellites may have run their course, this is a thoroughly enjoyable journey back to their roots. Even if they are reduced to playing clubs, it just gives those in the know a chance to get close and enjoy it all even more. For the record, this set was recorded at the legendary JB's in Dudley (and if you don't know, that's near Birmingham).
"Six Years Gone" is a slower number, but enjoyably dirty with some great guitar sound. The excellent take on "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" gets a very credible response. A very rough'n'ready take on Joe South's "Hush" is worth checking out too.
The set closes with "Be Good To Yourself", "Battleship Chains" (they couldn't leave alive without playing this) and "Like A Rolling Stone", featuring The Quireboys' Spike, Paul and Nick. Sounds like a party to me!
