JOHN CALE Circus Live 2-CD EMI (2007)
The former Velvet Underground man has been out on the road, again, and recorded this live set taking in work across his career.
The opening drone leads into 'Venus In Furs', which many will recognise, and his voice handles well. It’s darker, deeper, but a great song all the same.
Cale is a good vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, and here is backed by guitarist Dustin Boyer, bassist Joseph Karnes and drummer Michael Jerome (plus guests). The music is modern heavy progressive in places, not too dissimilar to what King Crimson did in the 90s; typically the material from Cale’s 2005 set blackAcetate, which gets a good airing and goes down well.
'Helen Of Troy' is another notable track as is 'Gun'.
Nice digipak, this well recorded collection covers a good career retrospective in a new way, it will please both Cale and VU fans.
