DEVIL'S SLINGSHOT Clinophobia Mascot Records (2007)
Power trio featuring drummer Virgil Donati, bassist Billy Sheehan and guitarist Tony MacAlpine, this is a musician's treat! And some decent hard rock too.
Sheehan's been very busy of late, and it's good to see MacAlpine (one of the original shredders) back on the scene.
Music for the musician and hard rock fan alike; opener 'Nederland' features some great bass runs, and the guitar is fluid. Superb! And unlike many similar jazz projects, the instruments don't get in each others' way. Yes they all play their asses off, but there's not competition. The art of playing in a band is knowing when to shut up if someone else takes the lead. That you get here, and there's planty of space for some rocking riffs, it's not all fretboard wanking.
'Ballade de Bastille' is a little funky, and 'Def Bitch Blues' is a fantastic number that is catchy, really grabs you.
All instrumental, but one of the best such albums I've heard in a long time.
