CHRIS SQUIRE Fish Out Of Water (CD/DVD) Sanctuary (2007)
Formerly of Mabel Greer's Toyshop, bassist Squire was one of the founders of Yes and the only constant throughout their complex history. This 1975 album is his one and only solo offering, and is here on CD in fully expanded form.
The music is clearly Yes influenced, but the sound, rather organ and guitar of Yes, is led by piano and bass, and there's a lot of melody there too. The vocals are not in the usual Anderson range but there are again similarities.
'You By My Side' could also have been a precursor to much of the 80s AOR/soft rock.
The flute and oboe intro to 'Silently Falling' could easily mix 'Peter And The Wolf' with 'A New Hope' score, a touch of King Crimson too. And at 11 minutes it's quite long too.
'Lucky Seven' is a strong track, and the addition of the US single mix makes for a complete set.
The bonus DVD includes two videos and an interview. Well worth a listen by anyone with an interest in Yes, and essential for fans.
