TRISTANIA Illumination Steamhammer SPV80001046 (2006)
Norwegian symphonic goth metal band Tristania release their fifth album and damn heavy it is too!
Opener 'Mercyside' mixes Mission/Nephilim with power metal, the duel vocals of the growling Osten Bergoy (giving a thrash edge) and the enchanting dreamy beautiful sounding Vibeke Stene add an extra edge.
There are dark edges to this metal, with overlying pop melodies mixed with intensity and power metal. Intricate guitar work comes through. There’s an anthemic touch to 'The Ravens' too. And in places on the album there’s a nod at Maiden too.
'Destination Departure' is a little more operatic too.
A great listen. Should do well if you like your metal with a gothic edge.
