STEVE GAINES 'One In The Sun'
Lemon CDLEM63 (2005)

One-time guitarist with Lynyrd Skynyrd who sadly perished in the 1977 plane crash, Gaines recorded this album two years prior to joining the band, but it wasn’t released for 14 years, surfacing in 1988 on MCA.

It’s a pleasant mix of southern style rock and r’n’b (the cover of It’s Alright), and a thoroughly enjoyable set.

It’s a much lighter effort than LS, a fair bit more MOR, and AOR too. But the influences are still there. So is the guitar work (some nice touches of slide), song writing and big band sound.

Enjoyable though it is, it’s not a patch on Skynyrd, and its importance does tend to get overplayed, especially by Dome’s otherwise informative sleevenotes. Fans will love it, but you’re much better off with Skynyrd’s Street Survivors LP.
