SPARKS Hello Young Lovers Gut GUTCD53 (2006)
The Mael brothers are back, and on their usual high form. Progressing nicely from their recent releases, this is a far cry from their ‘hey day hits’ such as 'Beat The Clock', but it’s still Sparks and still equally enjoyable.
Opener 'Dick Around' is as offbeat as anything in recent years, and the chorus features of Oompah Loompas, until the crunching guitars come in.
While there is a full band on show, the sound is still about the duo. Piano to the fore and eccentric vocals; 'Perfume' is as good as anything Sparks have ever done. Catchy too.
Many of the ideas are simple and each explored in each of the 10 songs here. It’s a formula Sparks have used for over 30 years and it’s what makes them so endearing.
Most of these tracks would fit the usual Sparks stage show (as last year’s DVD shows), because with Sparks you do get a show, not just a live concert.
Not their best ever set, but typically top notch Sparks.
