SILVER 'Addiction' MTM Music (2004)
Crikey, does Gary Barden never sleep nowadays? This year alone we’ve had
the excellent Statetrooper comeback album ‘The Calling’, then a varied and
enjoyable solo album and now this, Silver’s new album. Silver is Gary Barden
with Michael Voss (Casanova/Demon Drive) plus assorted guests. Not as many
guests as the last album ‘Intruder’, although Deep Purple’s Don Airey
returns. Joining him are drummers Marco Minnemann and Andreas Broon
(ex-Sisters of Mercy), plus Radioactive’s Tommy Denander helps out on
guitars as well.
Overall ‘Addiction’ is not as heavy as ‘Intruder’ but it still has those
melodies you can’t shake out of your head. ‘Never Let you Go’ is pure AOR
bliss, catchy and sticks in your mind after one play. ‘Angeline’ is full of
electronica and a soaring guitar solo midway through. Gary Barden’s vocals
are a highlight and then shine through clearly on ‘Why Did You Come Back’, a
brooding number. Album highlight is ‘This Is My Life’ that has a glorious
chorus (and a great little lyric ‘Until she cuts his pride off’!) - full of
harmonies and again there are plenty of keys and electronic effects fleshing
out the song.
The guitars do take more of a backseat on this album and less hard
rocking, but it is still a damn fine album. Sadly only a studio-based
project as it would be great to Silver perform on stage. With any of the
Silver albums you can’t go wrong and add them all to your CD collection
pronto!
