RICHIE KOTZEN Get Up Frontiers FRCD208 (2004)
The former Mr Big and Poison guitarist Richie has recorded a range of styles over his various solo albums, and has subsequently become big in Japan.
This hard rock affair, on which Richie handles everything (including production) shows hinat his best. Mixing classic, modern and 90s sounds with a touch of fusion and soul (although it’s not quite in Glenn Hughes’ league) it’s still an excellent solo set.
The Poison sound still lingers in the background, even in the soulful ballad ‘Remember’. The title track is high energy with strong funk elements, although there’s something lacking in the vocals.
You can’t deny the guy’s talent but you kinda get the feeling he needs a band to tie him down to one direction or at least supply a stronger vocalist.
That said it’s still thoroughly enjoyable.
