POPA CHUBBY Best Of - Ten Years With Poppa Chubby Dixiefrog DFGCD8595 (77:46) (77:58) (2005)
This blues rock compilation has a very easy and American feel, the music warm and commercial feel. If blues had a radio friendly AOR or even MOR edge, this covers it well. Come nice songs that are well performed but there’s little scope for any technical proficiency to shine. Sure it’s tight and well produced, and the elements of slide guitar are welcome, but there’s little else. There are elements of Gary Moore, Peter Green, Chris Rea and rock’n’roll, but in a samey, sometimes bland way.
Popa Chubby has produced several albums over the last 10 years, and although this digipak tells us which albums tracks are from, there’s no dates, history or any further band info. The PC photos are nearly as comical as the name, which sounds like a nu-metal clown.
The music is worth a casual listen, but certainly lights no fires. The project and packaging do need a rethink.
