MARCEL COENEN Colour Journey Lion Music LMC163 (2006)
Guitarist Coenen, with a solid band and an array of vocalists, has really provided a diverse journey here. A mixture of styles, it’s largely straight and polished metal. Great on tracks like the opening 'Waiting' which alone makes the album worth checking out. But the intros on some of the power ballads are more akin to Michael Bolton. Something even the strong vocals can’t save.
The guitar work on 'Abstract Impact' is heavy, interesting and innovative, definitely one of the better tracks. Other tracks try to be too cleaver and end up disjointed.
A journey indeed, with as many lows as highs. The highs make it worth a listen, but just too many tracks I personally would have to skip.
