A GUITARS SUPREME ‘Giant Steps in Fusion Guitars’
Mascot M7102-2(2004)

Yet another instrumental jazz-fusion guitar rock CD. They’re coming thick and fast it seems

Based around the talents of guitarist/arranger/producer Jeff Richman, bassist Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, Santan, Phil Colllins), pianist Larry Goldings and drummer Tom Brechtlein, it’s another technical yet often tiresome feast.

It does flow more smoothly than some, with the keyboard playing a prominent role in places. An interesting blend of anal rhythms and noodling solos are the usual order, without being too boring.

A plethora of guests include Steve Lukather and Greg Howe do add some nice touches, but it’s not music I can really immerse myself in.

Coffee table music at its best.

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
