EDGAR BROUGHTON BAND Bandages And Chilly Mornings Castle CMDDD1335 (2006) Edgar Broughton Band

This 2CD compiles the 1972 Chilly Morning Mama live set with the 1976 album Bandages. An odd coupling yes, but the music is classic EBB.

The live set (last issued in 1998) kicks off with 'Side By Side', and the nine minute 'Call Me A Liar' is a great hard and rough blues number. Period hard rock at its best. Sadly the set is not too consistent, and the poppier tracks could be seen to influence some of the guitar bands of the 90s. In 'Poppy' you can nearly hear the chorus of ‘Parklife’!

The later studio set is a very different animal, less muddy, and more American sounding straight rock. 'Get A Rise' features a steel guitar, and there are both acoustic and new wave touches in the songs too. An interesting mixture that works in some places and not in others.

The fuzz guitar and blues come out for 'Love Gang', so it’s quite a varied set.

Good but not classic, and well packaged.
