COSTE APETREA Rites Of Passage
Lion Music LMC167 (2006)

Can a record really be so good and yet so awful at the same time?

Well yes. Here we have an excellent prog fusion multi-instrumentalist releasing a new album, and it does have some excellent touches.

Virtuoso though this chap is, and some great moments too (the intro to 'Romana Lucia' for starters), it often comes over as disjointed.

The opening title track I found quite annoying, and other fusion moments detract from some otherwise superb prog metal.

Because the good is so good and the fusion so intrusive this album intricately mixes the extremes, making it emotionally hard work to listen to.
