CHERIE CURRIE Beauty's Only Skin Deep
Lemon CDLEM60 (36:00)

Currie found fame as teenage singer with the Runaways; alongside Joan Jett and Lita Ford stardom was guaranteed, even if they only recorded three albums together.

This is her 1978 debut, produced by Runaways svengali Kim Fowley, so sound and image are all nicely orchestrated, aimed at the rock buying male youth of the time. It’s a lot more mature than the Runaways, more professional, and more mainstream too. The title track is a heart felt rock ballad, as is much of the album. Nicely crafted AOR, and in places a steel guitar add a touch of country.

A case of the music’s only skin deep; sought after by fans but otherwise a nicely packaged yet very average album.

*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
