THE CALIFORNIA GUITAR ALBUM A Christmas Album (Inside Out, 2002)
The second album by this trio this year and one with an obvious
seasonal flavour. It contains some very different interpretations of
established Christmas tunes such as `Jingle Bells', `Silent Night'
and `God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'. The guitar playing is superb, none
more so than the reworking of `Merry Xmas Mr Lawrence', a track that
stands out on this CD. Other highlights are `Greensleeves' which
again features sublime acoustic guitar playing. Apart from the
guitars there is only some sax and bells but the songs feel fuller, a
case where less is more.
A very welcome change from all those tired old Christmas
compilations that get wheeled out very year. Perfect music for your
Christmas celebrations and a great way to chill out. With a bit of
airplay and exposure this could be a Christmas winner as anyone can
enjoy this CD regardless of whether you like rock music or not.
