TWO SPOT GOBI The Sun Will Rise Independent Records (2012)
Our managing editor was raving to me about this Brighton 6 piece that incorporates elements of pop, rock, reggae, jazz and funk. And the band have made several GRTR! Radio playlists with material from their second studio album The Sun Will Arise. Mind you, at the time of his recommendation he had sunk several pints of real ale, and in there are some vague flavours of one of his other favourites - James Grant's Love & Money.
Recorded in California in the home of Grammy award winner Jason Mraz, and produced by Niko Bolas (Neil Young, John Mayer, Regina Spektor) the band's line up of cellist Rob Lewis, Dino Randhawa on guitar, Ben Daniel on bass, and Matt Ellis on trumpet gives them something of a unique breezy and mellow sound with lead singer James Robinson having a vocal style that combines elements of Mraz, Bruno Mars and Jamie Cullum.
It's undoubtedly an ‘easy listening' sound for sun-kissed summer days, and the hooks are impossible to dismiss but to my mind they're more likely to appeal to the Take That or Michael Buble audience than the hardened rock fan. Next thing you know, the managing editor will be telling me Gary Barlow is a song writing genius. Mind you...
