PAUL CASEY Big World (2012)
This is Paul Casey's debut release here in the UK although he has already drummed up an impressive following in his native Northern Ireland and Ireland. What is even more impressive after hearing the album is that he play nearly every instrument himself. Listening to the slow building epic 'Big World' you'd think there was at least a string section helping out!
After such a grandiose opener 'Now It's Gone' starts with an upbeat dance loop and then listen out for the Dave Gilmour/Ry Cooder approved guitar solo. Simply stunning stuff on the old ears.
The music catches you out as it sweeps to crescendos before falling down to a quieter tempo. 'You Are' and 'Different Planet' are songs someone like David Gray would love to have written I am sure. In fact Paul Casey's music has the appeal to be a hot with fans of David Gray, Elbow and even Pink Floyd in their late 80's/early 90's guise.
I would be very surprised if this doesn't prove a hit with music lovers who enjoy sweeping soundscapes coupled with thoughtful lyrics.
