MIM GREY - Chasing Tigers Right Track (2012)
Mim Grey - Sir Tom Jones' favourite female vocalist - impressed with her 2010 debut Grey Matters, although we concluded that her gentle acoustic based style - one that borders on a cross between The Carpenters and the more commercial / mainstream aspects of the country scene- wasn't perhaps strong enough to raise the London singer songwriter's profile above that of her contemporaries.
And apart from critical acclaim, the absence of any mainstream success - if you discount her summer support slots with Tom Jones and Roxette - would seem to bear out that assessment.
For the follow up, the song writing is once again a joint affair with American lyricist Cori Josias and although the songs on Chasing Tigers supposedly have an earthier feel, to my ears the album picks up exactly where Chasing Grey left off.
And it doesn't diverge from her earlier blueprint, meaning that Chasing Tigers is another supremely easy on the ear album, with Mim's vocals being as seductive as you're likely to hear. But the same lingering doubt remains - the absence of killer material that might act as a catalyst to wider exposure.
But in the meantime, those in the know can bask in the self satisfaction of having discovered the charms of one of Britain's best new vocal talents. If you're a fan of Sheryl Crow's quieter moments, this is for you.
