THE STRAND The Strand Rock Candy (2011)
Their one and only album, originally released in 1980 on Island, this LA band had their roots in Rural Still Life, the same band who gave us Toto. And in that nature, this is a prime slice of overlooked AOR.
With Toto's Jeff Pocaro at the production helm the connection is cemented, but there is also a strong power pop parp - more than a hint of Cheap Trick to the sound.
Opener 'Rock It Tonight' features some big keyboards and crunchy guitars, the vocals a stronger edge to the Heavy Pettin' style. A smooth guitar solo too.
The album is solid, melodic strong. The guitar solos are heavier than Toto, but the sound is there; the chorus to 'I Like It Like That' shares something with Toto's 'Lovers In The Night' that I can't quite put my finger on. The vocals are superb throughout.
As strong undiscovered melodic rock / AOR goes this is one of the best around and, in usual Rock Candy fashion, it's very well packaged.
