DON AIREY All Out Mascot Records (2011)
Pianist extraordinaire Airey has played on more rock and metal albums than most - Ozzy, Sabbath, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Gary Moore, MSG to name just a few.
Currently touring with Deep Purple, this album was recorded in 3 weeks when the band members could come together and it really comes over well.
From the opening 'The Way I Feel Inside' (where guest guitarist Bernie Marsden plays a blinder) the keyboards are rich, the sound energetic. Vocalist Carl Sentence (ex Krokus, Persian Risk) has a solid voice. Drummer Darren Mooney, bassist Lawrence Cottle and guitarist Rob Harris play with aplomb throughout.
The album sees Don explore angles of the Hammond Organ and play on a wide range of (often classical) influences. Boosey and Hawkes' 'Estancia' has the feel of ELP going for a real heavy belter
Elsewhere on the album we also get Joe Bonamassa and Don's brother Keith adding some extra guitar lines and, with Cottle's often jazz influenced bass lines, you get a full sound.
'Right Arm Overture' gives All Out its cricketing references, elements of Jon Lord circa Before I Forget and then Airey goes all out mixing rock and classical lines. This track alone shows why Don's keyboards fit so well on so many rock and metal albums.
The cover of Hendrix's 'Fire' is spot on, blistering, while 'Long Road' is more laid back, retaining the searing guitar of Keith Airey.
The closing 'Torbruk' is 10 minutes of epic glory.
A superb album, thoroughly enjoyable beginning to end.
