VIRGINIA WOLF Reissues Rock Candy (2010)
Virginia Wolf's two and only albums, released on Atlantic in 1986 and 1987 respectively. The band featured noted frontman Chis Ousey, guitarist Nick Bold, bassist Jo Burt and drummer Jason Bonham, the latter fresh from Airrace. The debut Virginia Wolf was produced by Queen's Roger Taylor, the second Push by Kevin Elsen (Europe's The Final Countdown), so both albums sound fantastic.
Solid, smooth, prime slices of commercial hard rock with some FM oriented rock/pop too. With Jason Bonham behind the drum stool you know you're in for a decent set. Imagine a cross between Led Zep and Toto.
Riffs aplenty, some good piano that intricately mixes in, solid vocals, and some good vocal harmonies too.
Sadly, success wasn't forthcoming and when record company support wavered, the band split. A shame, as they are both great albums.
Well packaged, with extensive notes and two bonus tracks on the second. Worth checking out.
Both ***½
