THE WHO Greatest Hits And More (2-CD) Universal (2010)
This compilation was originally released at the tail end of 2009, and now comes with a second disc of live material taken from the Greatest Hits Live set.
The studio disc covers the band's full career, and opens with 'I Can't Explain'. All will (or should) be well acquainted with 'My Generation', British Invasion / 60s guitar rock / pop at its very finest, a genuine anthem. 'The Kids Are Alright' sees the band delve in to psychedelia. The musical style, along with the individual inputs of guitarist Townsend, vocalist Daltrey, bassist Entwistle and drummer Moon have all influenced many, much copied.
The same goes for 'Substitute' and 'Happy Jack', the latter could easily have been an influence on early Pink Floyd.
From 'I Can See For Miles' to 'Pinball Wizard', and the brilliant 'Won't Get Fooled Again', the Who took 60s proto rock and kicked it around the solar system.
And the post Moon material still stands up well, although by the time Entwistle passed, the band were probably well past their peak.
The live material features many of the studio tracks here, but there are some surprises. The bulk of the material is recorded 1970 – 1976, so some classic material that reminds you just how good, how powerful, and most of all entertaining the band were live. Even the 80s recordings stand up, and the 1965 BBC live recording of 'My Generation' is worth checking out. But any Who fan will tell you, if you've got Live At Leeds, there's not really much else to be said for The Who live.
I know it's a repackage, it's been out many times before, but hell, it's worth it.
