STEEL PANTHER,
Brixton Academy. London 19 March 2010

I voted
Steel Panther's official debut 'Feel The Steel' as my number one album
of the year on this very website last December. An album which I
said was all killer and no filler.
12 tracks
full of testosterone with more licks than you would get at a Bangkok
brothel. The gigs from last year caused massed hysteria, like the ones I
witnessed at the 229 Club, Shepherds Bush Empire and the bursting of the
seams at their tent gig at the Download Festival.
I have also
stated in the past, that I wished that the Panther would cut out their
in-between song banter and just get on with the music, because the music
itself speaks volumes.
However that
could prove difficult tonight as the band are headlining the Brixton
Academy and have to stretch out a 90 minute show with tracks from that
debut, a B-side and a couple of covers. Tonight is being filmed
for a future DVD which will be released in 3D. (No title as yet
but 'Steel Panther in VD' anyone?).
Opening up
the show was not a support band as such, but an eroctic display from the
Sirens, who did an alarming set. (Not to be confused with the
American female garage rock band.) featuring girls formerly of the Fuel
Girls, doing a saucy routine that kept the fella's happy.
Unfortunately I couldn't get near the front to put my quid in the pint
glass. I would like to see more of the Sirens in the future (If you know
what I mean?).
Coming on
stage to their signature tune 'Eyes Of The Panther', it was like Steel
Panther haven't been away at all.
The
excitement was still there and the crowd were lapping it up in
submission. The in-between banter started straight away with
Satchell saying ''Who wants to party on my side?'' getting big cheers on
the right for only Lexxi Foxxx to ask the same question on the left,
''Who wants to party on my side?'', at this point I was half expecting
the drummer to say ''Who wants to party on my back side?'', but the boys
hadn't thought of that crack.
The sound
was a bit muffled, as usually happens when a band is filming a video to
suit the audio recording equipment and fans at the back of the Academy
were complaining that they couldn't understand what the band were saying
in-between the songs which at times could last for over five minutes.
Michael
Starr came out dressed as a ring master (No, not that kind of ring
master, but a circus ring master.) that would've made Noddy Holder
proud, in a glittery black top hat and red coat, along with the girls
from the Sirens for 'Stripper Girl' for some Sunset Strip fun.
Later on
Starr was being pulled on stage by two Asian girls (Will you lot
behave?) whilst he sat on a rickshaw, for 'Asian Hooker'.
'I Want
Pussy' is a great number that was left off the album, it has a great Def Leppardy chorus, although the Leps would've most probably be singing
about cats.
For encore
time the band took us back to a place they hold dearly in their hearts .
A time when metal was all fun and big hair and not a lumberjack shirt in
sight, for a cracking version of Motley Crue's 'Shout At The Devil' and
a thumble through Guns 'N Roses 'Paradise City'.
On a night
when the BBC were raising money for Sport Relief, Steel Panther were
still able to keep their end up.
Sex List: Eyes Of A Panther / Eatin' Ain't Cheatin' / Fat Girl (Thar She
Blows) / Party All Day (F#ck All Night) / Hell's On Fire / Stripper Girl
/ Satchell's solo / Asian Hooker / Turn Out The Lights / Girl From
Oklahoma / I Want Pussy / Commuinty Property / The Shocker /Death To All
But Metal....encores Shout At The Devil / Paradise City
