KACEY CUBERO - Fill Your Cup (2010)
Fill Your Cup is the third album from Americana/alt-country artist Kacey Cubero.
Brought up in Washington DC she headed to California after completing a degree in business and finance. After years of honing her rock/alt country style she was named Artist of the Year by the Santa Barbara Blues Society in 2006. And in 2009 her song Feather In The Wind won an independent music award for best folk song of the year.
So, a smart cookie with an impressive pedigree, Kacey’s new album produced by David Z (Prince, Etta James) is an alluring blend of rock, folk, country, soul and blues. And what marks Kacey out from her contemporaries is her vocal delivery which is heavily reminiscent of Shelby Lynne and Stevie Nicks - a sweet southern drawl that is, in equal proportions, expressive and sensual.
With an excellent backing band of Josh Davis on guitars, Sam Bolle and Dave Sutton on bass, and Tom Lackner on drums, there’s some superb playing but what makes the set standout are the songs and Kacey’s vocals. The songwriting is atmospheric in a True Blood and Harvey Lee Oswald swamp twang style topped with the smoldering bittersweet vocals of a chain smoking angel. Exquisite.
