FANNY Rock And Roll Survivors Lemon (2010)
Sisters Jean and June Millington secured their place in rock folklore when, in 1969, with band mates Alice de Buhr and Nickey Barclay they became the first all female rock band - Fanny - to secure a major label record deal (with Warner / Reprise).
They quickly established a following in the US and here as a result of support slots to major acts like Jethro Tull, Slade and Humble Pie and with 4 excellent albums between 1970 and 1973 - Fanny, Charity Ball, Fanny Hill and Mother's Pride - soon knocked on the head any notions that they were no more than a novelty act.
Which brings us to Rock And Roll Survivors. Unfortunately, any album with the word 'survivors' in the title usually signals a band in decline. And for Fanny it proved to be terminal. By the time the album was recorded, Jean Millington had left to be replaced by Patti Quatro (Suzi's sister) on guitars and the band seemed uncertain of their direction. They folded shortly afterwards.
Despite being mastered from the original tapes, the sound quality isn't as good as you might hope for and the band sound like the all girl rock band portrayed in Russ Meyer's 1970 soft porn classic 'Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls'. That is, somewhere between hard rock and the rock and roll of The Fonz and The Shangri-Las.
If you have taste for a little Fanny (ooh, err, Missus) I'd suggest you look a little further back in the band's catalogue.
