THE STRAWBS Dancing To The Devil's Best Witchwood Media (2009)
Formed in the late 60s by vocalist/guitarist David Cousins, the band celebrated their 40th anniversary with a gig at Twickenham Stadium (clever marketing, it was actually in one of the function rooms), and release this new album.
It's a real step on from the early material, mixing their early sound with a hard modern edge. Production from Chris Tsangarides has helped there.
Alongside Cousins is vocalist/guitarist Dave Lambert, bassist Chas Cronk, drummer Rod Coombes and keyboard player Oliver Wakeman (Yes that's son of Rick, the original organist).
In among the psychedelia there is a rhythmic prog ('Beneath The Angry Sky'), there are also touches of 80s stadium rock.
Many tracks are keyboard led, sounds like Wakeman Jnr isn't shy either. The mandolin gives an early and earthy sound too; Enter some folky rock sounds, which are equally prominent on the album.
This will sell on the Wakeman connection but is well worth a listen in its own right.
