STEVE CONTE & THE CRAZY TRUTH Varese Sarabande (2009)
This album from New York Dolls guitarist Steve Conte is rapidly becoming one of my favourite records of 2009.
'Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth' is raw, ragged and dripping with rock n' roll attitude. It mixes garage rock with the raunch and swagger normally associated with the Dolls' and the result is 11 powerful tracks that you will find it very hard to switch off, or indeed turn down.
Opening track 'This Is The End' sets the pace with its manic, yet slick approach. Then there is the voodoo-like blues of 'Texas T' and 'Busload of Hope' or the anthemic 'The Truth Ain't Pretty', whilst 'Strumpet-hearted Monkey Girl' would fit in nicely on either of The New York Dolls latest albums.
The theme that appears to run throughout this album is one of excess and attitude and at times the lyrics almost tell a biographical story. Conte's vocals and guitar playing fits perfectly with the dynamic rhythm section of drummer Phil Stewart and bassist Leeko and the musical interplay between the three of them is perfect for this style of music.
I've no doubt the band would be great live, however, for now you will have to settle for The New York Dolls who will be touring the UK from the 2nd December.
