ROY YOUNG The Best Of 50 Years Angel Air SJPCD296 (2009)
Roy Young celebrates 50 years in entertainment by releasing this 2 CD best-of covering his entire career. From working with the Beatles in Hamburg, appearing on legendary, and influential for the time, BBC music show 'Oh Boy!', working with Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers, through to being Bowie's keyboard player on 1977's 'Low' album- Roy has enjoyed an active career.
This new anthology-style collection includes early tracks such as 'Big Fat Mama' and 'Hey Little Girl' - just 2 of the late ‘50's tracks on offer, together with a number of live tracks. There are also renditions of Little Richard's 'Keep A Knocking', The Beatles' 'Lovely Rita' and 'She's A Woman', Chuck Berry's 'Let It Rock' and Ray Charles' 'Mess Around' alongside a host of original numbers such as 'Slow Down ' and 'Devil's Daughter'. The 27 tracks on the CDs cover rock ‘n roll, soul and blues, each genre sitting comfortably with the others. However, the only draw-back here is the varying sound quality across the tracks, this cannot be avoided though, due to the age of the original recordings.
There are also a number of tracks recorded between 2000 and 2003; these coincide with the release of Young's 2002 album 'Still Young'.
This collection is a great way to celebrate the milestone of half a century in the business.
