ROBERT CALVERT and MAXIMIM EFFECT Live At The Stars'n'Stripes (2CD)Voiceprint (2009)
Calvert, best known for his work with Hawkwind, led a busy life until his death in 1988. And following from the Captain Lockheed and Lucky Leif sets, he'd been planning another solo album, amongst other projects. That was cut short, but this live set from 1986 is a stunning set will please many.
Now remastered (it's been much bootlegged), and previously available as a download, it gets an official CD release at last. This Carlisle gig was mid tour, the band sounding tighter than on tapes from earlier in the outing. Some of the solo material covered is right up Hawkwind's street, with 'Lord Of The Hornets' a stand out sonic attack. Other solo material like 'Radio Egypt' and 'Acid Rain' are thoroughly enjoyable too.
Of course there a couple of ‘Wind numbers, the first up 'Quark Strangeness And Charm'. Between the live set and bonus pre-tour demos, there are also 'Robot', 'Spirit Of The Age' and 'Psi Power'.
By 1986 there was still life in Hawkwind material and Robert Calvert. Recording is a little ropey in places but largely pretty good. Enjoyable and one collectors will love too.
