MORAZ Change Of Space TimeWave IDVP0120CD (2009)
Patrick Moraz is perhaps best known as the keyboard wiz who replaced Rick Wakeman in Yes for 1974's 'Relayer'. Before that, he was in Refugee with two ex-members of The Nice. He has also been releasing solo albums fairly solidly over the years, and many have been released on his own TimeWave label via Voiceprint.
'Change Of Space' is inspired but not subsumed by world rhythms. With guest vocals from one-time Santana crooner (and Scot!) Alex Ligertwood and Don Adey this is also an ensemble piece with effective use of five backing vocalists on 'Peace In Africa', the title track and 'The Power of Emotion'.
If you look at the back of the CD booklet you could be forgiven thinking that this was a keyboard demo disc, such is the array of hardware used. 'The Sonique Prinz Suite' might reinforce that view with Moraz putting the said hardware (the Roland AXIS to be precise) through its paces and sounding like a lead guitarist or electric violinist.
Overall this is superior and accessible jazz fusion with touches of early eighties Santana. As such, for some ears this might all seem a little dated but Moraz's musicality keeps things interesting.
