LEFT SIDE BRAIN Collider Sugar Shack Records (2009)
Released in February 2009, 'Collider' is actually one of the heavy rock gems of the year. This is the Bristol-based four-piece's third album and it combines mind-numbing riffery with memorable choruses and harmonies. And thankfully there's not a metalcore grunt within earshot.
When I was 16 and being inducted to the world of heavy rock, Welsh trio Budgie were the standard bearers. Left Side Brain could well be the modern equivalent, but may appeal to older rockers too especially when trying to rekindle old glories with a real ale or two.
There's really not much chaff here: it's all hard grain rocking. And the twin guitar onslaught buzzes through the ears like a rampant chainsaw.
'Weaponise', 'Mastermind' and 'We All Got It Coming, Kid' are excellent examples of the band's essentially riff-driven formula, but with a melodic twist and depth in the harmonies. 'Chewer' is perhaps the standout track, though, and would have been a better choice of single than 'Colloblast' (Released 12 October 2009) .
There's plenty more to enjoy on the album, too, and it should appeal to those who like bands like Helmet,Foo Fighters and Alice In Chains. Catch them live if you can.
