DANIELLE SPENCER Calling All Magicians (2009)
Second album from this Australian singer/songwriter who has roped in big name producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie) and for you celeb followers she is married to actor Russell Crowe. But what of the music?
Put is this way if you enjoy Kate Bush and Tori Amos you will love this album. With Visconti onboard the music has great attention to the backing arrangements with the piano the lead instrument. Some wonderful backing vocal arrangements throughout as well, none more so than on the single 'Wish I'd Been Here'.
If there is any criticism is that the songs for the most part are all ballads and it can be a bit much for one sitting, although 'On Your Side' livens the tempo up a bit though.
I am sure Danielle Spencer will be a name to watch throughout 2010 and beyond as the music alone is perfect for daytime BBC Radio 2 playlists. Add to that the fame factor of her husband and Tony Visconti you have enough here to get that all important hook for the wider media outside of the music press. Highly recommended album and perfect for a Kate Bush fan like myself.
