BITCHFIRE Bitchfire (2008)
Marketed as Lita Ford meets Whitesnake, I'm just not sure. For a start the artwork for this Florida based band looks a little on the cheesy, 'tongue in cheek' side, and then there's the band's age.
They're no chickens. But there's nothing wrong with that - most classic heavyweight bands have been round for the odd decade or 4. Fronted by 'rock goddess' Sharyn Peach, who it has to be said has a great set of rock pipes, the image - on the cover at least - doesn't quite fit - she looks more like a karaoke singer. And as for the 'boys' in the band, they look like they've been round the block a few times.
But as I say, nothing wrong with that and the band lay down a rock steady heavy and unrelenting commercial rock sound. More Saxon than Whitesnake, to my mind though. And while I can see the Lita Ford reference point, Sharyn is a far more powerful vocalist in the mould of Lisa Smith(see GRTR! review review).
The album doesn't let up from the opening to the dying chords and it's a fun filled and fairly enjoyable ride. Heavy female fronted rock par excellence, although naturally there's a few highlights that would hold their own in more elevated circles - Headlines, Toxic Waste and Selfish Heart, to name three.
If there's any gripes - image (fish or foul?), the songwriting isn't entirely top drawer (although at its best, it more than passes muster), but what is really missing is a young gun with some really hot guitar licks. That would be the cream on the cake. In the meantime, file next to Lisa Smith and Hydrogyn (in that order).
