AT VANCE Ride The Sky AFM Records (2009)
A band whose name I know but have only heard a couple of songs by and in a very crowded power metal field they need something special to help them stand out.
Personally I am getting power/prog metal fatigue as every man and his dog seems to be churning out albums in these genres.
This album reminds me more of Power Quest in that although the band is known for power metal they in fact veer more into melodic hard rock.
'Torn'and the immense 'Falling'are instant hits with strong melodies and choruses. But for those with a taste for OTT metal with a classical touch guitarist Olaf Lenk comes into his own on 'Vivaldi - Summer Set Part 2'.
The only blot on their copybook for me is an ill advised cover of Free's 'Wishing Well'. The vocals and metal riffs just don't sound right...
A very strong and enjoyable album that sees the band easily pulls themselves away from other bands due to their great knack of penning strong melodies. Plenty here to enjoy and you can see these songs working well in a live environment.
