4BITTEN No More Sins Rocksector Records RSRCD1204 (2009)
My first introduction to this band was at the Dan Reed gig at the start of his UK tour. Marshalled by the enterprising Mark Appleton, this Greek four-piece played an acoustic set in support, and it sounded good. Fronted by American singer Fofi (although of Greek parentage) I could hear clearly the quality of the songwriting and Fofi's bluesy rock vocal.
"No More Sins" was, then, something of a revelation: the band in all its electric glory. They've been together for half a dozen years or so, are based in Athens, and on this evidence demand a wider audience.
It's all very well done, everything in the right place, George's guitar interesting throughout (fusing funky and metal flavours) and restrained when necessary, and an excellent rhythm section in Akis and Angelo.
The diminutive Fofi is heavily influenced by Janis Joplin, hence the inclusion in their live set of 'Piece Of My Heart' and a warning to the front row about impending holler. On the album, you can hear that she is coming from a blues-rock base, but this is actually quite refreshing. In places she reminds me of Nikki from Never The Bride, and indeed that band might be a reasonable benchmark.
The band write commercial rock that never outstays its welcome. The lyrics might be a little cheesy in places and economical, but the overall vibe is infectious.
There are some real standouts on the album including 'Believe', the superb 'Tell Me', 'Waiting So Long' and 'In The Shadows'. Definitely, ones to watch.
