WIRED DESIRE
The Fly, New Oxford Street, London, 19 August 2008
Over the
last two or three of years there has been an encouraging revival of young
bands playing unashamed classic rock, and Wired Desire can be added to the
growing list of rising talents on the evidence of an impressive London
showcase.
The
Glaswegian quintet, who won the praise of fellow Scots Nazareth when they
supported them, are aged between 20 and 22 and their raw vigour was very
impressive.
Their self-confessed influences AC/DC and ZZ Top were on heavy rotation before
they went on stage, but their raw, passionate rock n roll with riffs and solos
aplenty reminded me chiefly of Appetite for Destruction-era Guns n Roses, none
more so than on No One Sleeps.
George Thorogood's The Hard Stuff turned into a supercharged bluesy boogie, and
of their own songs Badlands really impressed, while encore Ride concluded a 45
minute set.
They are a
tight unit all round but special praise should go to guitarist Jam, not
just for some very Slash-esque guitar work for pulling a variety of
classic shapes with his Gibson (less sure about the beret/surf shorts
combo though!)
As their songwriting matures and they develop their own distinctive sound,
bigger things could beckon. To adapt the commentary on the 16 year old
Wayne Rooney, Wired Desire- remember the name! ****
