VOODOO CIRCLE Voodoo Circle AFM Records (2008)
Voodoo Circle is the band formed by Silent Force guitarist Alex Beyrodt who has assembled an impressive set of musicians including vocalist David Readman (Pink cream 69), Simple Minds drummer Mel Gaynor and bassist Mat Sinner.
There are also guest spots from legendary bass player Rudy Sarzo (Whitesnake/Ozzy/BOC) and Doogie White (Cornerstone/Rainbow) who takes lead vocal on the very Rainbow sounding 'Dream Of Eden'.
The music is classic hard rock meets metal with a distinctive Rainbow sound in places particularly on some of Alex Beyrodt's solos. Listening to 'Man And Machine' or the excellent 'Desperate Heart' (featuring some massive drum beats!) you'd think this was Rainbow!
If there is one criticism it is some of the songs sound to generic, both in the music and lyrics. 'Master Of Illusion' falls into this trap. Just like a classic Rainbow album there is an instrumental, 'White Lady Requiem', led by the guitar and allowing Beyrodt to show of his skills admirably.
Musically and production wise (it's that man Dennis Ward again) it can't be faulted but maybe a few stronger songs would push this into the 'must have' category. That said lovers of Rainbow, Deep Purple and David Readman's other band Pink Cream 69 will enjoy this album I am sure.
