THE LEMONHEADS It's A Shame About Ray Rhino (2008)
Originally released in 1992 this album was the break out one for the Lemonheads and this re-issue adds nine unreleased demo recordings of the songs which made this album plus a b-side 'Shaky Ground'. Evan Dando and his band reeled out a series of short, spiky pop/indie rock like 'Kitchen' and Rudderless'.
The cover of the 'Hair' musical number 'Frank Mills' is nothing special but the other cover on here, Simon & Garfunkel's 'Mrs. Robinson' fairly races out of the blocks and is very heavy guitar wise. The song was famously featured on the movie 'Wayne's World 2'.
The DVD of adds promo videos and live performances from the Lemonheads' Australian tour (these have all been previously available on video). The demos are the songs that will draw the fans in and mostly it is Evan Dando and his acoustic guitar. These allow the listener a vivid insight into how the songs developed.
Of course this was cutting edge and the Lemonheads were very much band of the moment back in the early 90's but as many bands know the passage of time is not too kind to their music. Luckily this is not the case here and the songs stand up well and with the added demos a real 'must have' for fans of the band.
