THE LAs Deluxe Edition Universal (2008)
The La's 1990 debut (and only) album left an indelible mark on the face of Britpop and of course the unforgettable single There She Goes. But the reality was that founder member and band figurehead Lee Mavers was never satisfied with the Steve Lillywhite produced sessions.
Nevertheless the album captured perfectly a moment in time and has endured remarkably well. And although it's already been subject of a re-release back in 2001, it now comes in for Deluxe Edition treatment, which in this case bulks it up considerably with a handful of radio sessions, seven alternative mixes and a complete re-production job with Mikes Hedges behind the desk.
Whether Mavers is any happier with Hedges revisiting of the material, we don't know. But it does present the album with a more authentic 1960's sound - which was what Mavers was originally looking for.
The tracklisting is also tweaked a little out goes Liberty Ship and, Freedom Song, and in come Knock Me Down, Clean Prophet, and Come In Come Out.
A follow-up album has long been rumoured, although legend has it Mayer has repeatedly refused to release any new material until this earlier work was satisfactorily represented.
Whether this Deluxe Edition will be enough to coax the release of some new material remains to be seen. I suggest you don't hold your breath.
But for now, bask in a piece of seminal Britpop/rock.
