LOST WEEKEND Fear And Innocence Escape Music (2008)
Lost Weekend return with this their fifth album and easily the band's best effort since 2002's 'New Religion'. They have gone for real riff driven songs and although they still use keyboards they are used more sparingly than previously. The core of vocalist Paul Uttley and guitarist David Thompson are still in place so overall the sound doesn't change that much and the production is very crisp.
Of the hard rock tunes opener the Magnum sounding 'The Eagle', the rattling rocker 'A Little Older With Style' and the superb 'Another Lonely Night In Tears' are all cracking songs. The latter is an instant classic with its rapid tempo and very tasty guitar parts. But wait it gets better! 'Father And Son' is their best song for me to date, with a heartfelt lyric and nice use of acoustic guitar/keys making for a very strong song.
The other slow number on here, 'Hearts N' Minds' doesn't quite match this but again uses keys to good effect.
Lost Weekend have recorded a fine set of melodic hard rock tunes and are one of the few UK bands to fly the hard rock flag along with Sacred Heart, Burn and Ten. Like their previous album 'New Religion' this album will get regular plays by me in the future.
