FAMILY Best Of Family & Friends Angel Air SJPCD264 (2008)
Between 1967 and 1973, when Family were active, they carved out a niche for themselves as a challenging progressive rock band fusing soul, folk, acid jazz and psychedelic sounds. Since they folded in ‘73 they've been something of a cult band. Singer Roger Chapman has become a credible star in his own right in the years since their demise.
This single CD and DVD is excellent value for money. I don't mean that as a superficial plug but as an honest comment. The CD collects 12 tracks from Family's career, also including two bonus tracks with live versions of ‘Spanish Tide' and ‘Part Of The Load.' It's amazing just how good some of these songs sound four decades since the band's demise.
The DVD is a 16 song concert courtesy of Roger Chapman and friends. The gig was recorded at Newcastle Opera House in 2002. It's a thrilling set list featuring some of their more famous tracks like ‘The Weaver's Answer' and ‘In My Own Time.' The DVD also includes an enlightening interview with Mr. Chapman.
There are detailed sleeve notes by Pete Feenstra, which puts Family's/Chapman's career into perspective. Chapman fans will no doubt be pleased with this lovingly compiled set.
