ERIC BELL Irish Boy (2-CD) Angel Air SJPCD255 (2008)
Guitarist Eric Bell played on the first three Thin Lizzy albums and revamped the traditional tune ‘Whisky In The Jar’. This album was first released back in 1998 but was such a limited release hardly anyone got to hear it! Now Angel Air have re-released it, complete with informative sleeve notes by Joe Geesin on Bell’s career pre & post Thin Lizzy including a few albums with Noel Redding.
On this album it is the classic blues rock trio with Bell joined by drummer Andy Golden and on bass/vocals Tony Williams. Some interesting tunes on here like ‘Just To Get By’ which sounds like Jethro Tull and the laid back title track, where Bell lays down some stylish solos. Eric Bell has made his name in the blues rock firled and tow slow burning bleus songs, ‘Standing In The Middle’ and ‘You Were One’ are fine examples of the blues. But perhaps the ill advised reggae of ‘Priest Of Love’ is best avoided…
Of definite interest to fans of early Thin Lizzy and those who like a slow, blues rock style of playing and songs. An album certainly worthy of a proper release all these years later.
