EPITAPH Return To Reality SPV/Brain Revisted (2008)

Epitaph

Originally released in 1979 on the Brain label, the roots of this album date back to 1974 with guitarist/vocalist Cliff Jackson's writing.

Twin guitar and keyboards from Germany do make for a good album. Think American hard rock mixed with European prog. Drummer Fritz Randow (Victory, Saxon) was ex Eloy, as was bassist Harvey Janssen.

Opener "Set Your Spirit Free" is a solid rock number, riff led. "Strangers" could easily nod at Kansas, with some excellent guitar work, while "We Can Get Together" opens progressively and features am off beat guitar and a west coast rock/pop feel.

"Summer Sky" is largely an acoustic number, but the layering of keyboards and backing vocals fills the sound well. In contrast, "On The Road" is more of a metal number.

The album sound is good, an enjoyable atmosphere, although the production is a little dull.

Well packaged though, digipak, sleevenotes and a bonus track; one of the better hard rock albums to come out of Germany.

***½
