AXEL RUDI PELL Tales Of The Crown SPV/Steamhammer (2008)
10 new tracks from the whizz German guitarist, who found fame with Steeler back in the 80s.
Opening track "Higher" features a solid and crunchy riff from Pell, and some superb upper register vocals from Johnny Gioeli. "Ain’t Gonna Win" is a more commercial number with some great vocal harmonies, the guitar as metal as ever. Some nice shred in the guitar solo that isn’t over done.
Although Pell has provided rhythm guitars too, the bass and keyboards fill the sound well too.
"Angel Eyes" is a catchy number, the chord rhythms as effective as any solo, with a nod back to the 80s. If Joe Lynn Turner fronted some quality heavy metal it would nod in this direction.
"Touching My Soul" is slower, melodic and atmospheric, almost haunting.
And when Pell adds some acoustic, he provides uses it to good effect to duel with himself on the electric.
In the main an excellent contemporary release from a classic metal guitarist.
