VAN MORRISON The Best Of Volume 3 2-CD EMI (2007)
Whatever the man’s reputation for being difficult, he’s still produced some fine songs over the years. And with such a long (and full) career, no one compilation can do justice. Hence the volume 3.
The music here is of later material, from 1992 to 2007, and while Van may have been revolutionary, here the music is quality but just passes by. Smooth big band pop with blues and jazz touches, most tracks with a piano and a brass of some kind.
Some great melodies though, the guy is a good singer, and duets with Tom Jones (previously unreleased), John Lee Hooker, Georgie Fame, BB King and Lonnie Donegan all make for good listening.
'Moondance' is a good track, good album, too.
For general all round Van Morrison and a good introduction to his later work, and two previously unreleased numbers and good annotation, it’s a good and worthy set.
