VARIOUS Freeway Jam - To Beck & Back Mascot Records (2007)
Jeff Beck is revered not just by fans but also fellow guitarists, of whom ten appear on here paying their respects to the legend that is Jeff Beck. Musically it is like Jeff Beck’s solo output - varied ranging from jazz/fusion through to blues and straight ahead rock.
Backing each guitarist is a top-notch bunch of musicians including Toto’s drummer Simon Philips (who has worked with Beck in the past) and bass player Stu Hamm.
Standout tracks for me are ‘Beck’s Bolero’ which Eric Johnson reshapes and makes his own - no mean feat considering how good the original version is. Steve Morse just lets rip on the title track, whilst Warren Haynes has great fun on rock/fusion of ‘The Pump’ (a track which first surfaced on ‘Beck’s Guitar Workshop’).
This CD is a ‘must have’ for fans of either the guitarists featured on here and the main man himself, although being honest not for the casual fan. The guitar playing on here is truly jaw dropping at times and wouldn’t it be great to take this on the road with the guitar players featured on here and Jeff Beck headlining? I can but dream!
*** for the commercuial aspect **** for the guitar playing.
