THE CAKE SALE (2007)
Originally released in Ireland in November 2006 and already a double platinum selling disc, The Cake Sale is a charity record put together by an amazing collection of musicians over 9 previously unreleased and specifically recorded tracks.
With all profits going to Oxfam, the project was put together by Brian Crosby of Irish band Bell X1 with a supporting cast including Glen Hansard (The Frames), Conor Deasy (The Thrills), Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol), Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy), Nina Perrson (The Cardigans, Lisa Hannigan, and Gemma Hayes.
And while charity records are normally light on quality control, this is a record that stands up to scrutiny as an authentic album in its own right. Hauntingly beautiful, there's some terrific performances Gemma Hayes on All The Way Down, Lisa Hannigan on Last Leaf, Nina Persson on Black Winged Bird, Glen Hansard on Too Many People, and Neil Hannon on Aliens.
Frankly, the fact that the money is going is to a good cause is a bonus, because the decision whether or not to buy this disc is a no brainer. Do yourself and the charity a favour - go out and buy it now.
