AXEL RUDI PELL Diamonds Unlocked SPV (2007)
Oh no I hear you cry it is another covers album! But fear not as Axel Rudi Pell has picked songs he enjoys be they rock or otherwise with some interesting results.
The good covers include a mainly acoustic working through 'Love Gun' by Kiss, a cracking almost metal version of U2's 'Beautiful Day', where vocalist Johnny Gioeli sings up a storm.
The surprise comes in the guitar led version of Phil Collins' hit 'In The Air Tonight' which includes some added instrumental passages which works well. Good, solid run though Montrose's 'Rock The Nation' too.
However, the Who's 'Won't Get Fooled Again' lacks the bombast of the original and 'Stone', originally by Chris Rea but since covered by the Law (Kenny Jones/Paul Rodgers) where Pell heard this song first, is very average.
Surprise cover? Has to be the Mission's 'Like A Child Again' which sounds better than the original!
Overall an enjoyable listen and like any good covers set you go hunting after the originals and/or add them to your collection. Pell is on top form playing wise and Johnny Gioeli cab always be relied to put in a good vocal performance. Quick mention as well to Ferdy Doernberg whose keyboard flourishes round out the sound nicely.
