TOMAS BODIN Pinup Guru (Inside Out 2002)
Tomas Bodin is the keyboard player in the Flower Kings and also an
accomplished solo artist. The album is all instrumental with back-up from
fellow Flower Kings’ members Jonas Reingold (bass) and Zoltan Csorsz
(drums). Tomas Bodin states in the publicity that he wanted an ELP sound,
very Hammond organ led. Well the opener ‘Sodium Regale’ is certainly ELP
like with driving Hammond organ making the track have a very 70’s feel.
‘What’s Going On’ again starts with a 70’s prog rock feel but by the songs
end has transformed into a modern day sound. The musicianship displayed here
on this track and elsewhere on the album is of the highest quality.
‘Me and Liz’ is Bodin’s attempt to express his feelings over his divorce
in musical terms - it works very well and it is a moving track. ‘Harlem
Heat’ mixes some gospel flavour into a very ELP keyboard sound, with the
hectic opening ending on a mellow refrain. ‘The Final Swig’ cleverly adds
parts of the previous tracks into a new composition and is a fitting ending
to a fine album.
An album that fans of 70’s era ELP will enjoy along with the Flower Kings'
many fans. An amazing musical soundscape and very enjoyable.
